Highly concentrated flavours the palate is all consuming and deliciously extravagant. The dry grown, old vines that yielded this fruit managed to produce wonderful fruit despite small volumes. We hand picked the fruit in April after the extreme heat which for table wines isn’t ideal but for fortified is perfect to ensure the Baume levels were high enough to produce an outstanding fortified wine. The fruit was transported to the winery where it was crushed, destemmed and fermented in a static fermenter with regular pumping over to extract colour and tannin. Fortification, on skins, with 7-yearold wood aged brandy spirit was done at precisely the right time to arrest the fermentation and capture the perfect balance of alcohol and sweetness. Pressing occurred soon after fortification, and this was followed by 80 months maturation in new French barriques, integrating the fruit, the tannin and the spirit before bottling with minimal filtration or fining.

A wonderfully example of big and bold Fortified Barossa Shiraz which will stand the test of time, ensure it is allowed to breathe for at least 3 hours prior to consuming.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0715/9152/6638/files/Monolith-Vintners-Old-Vine-Barossa-Valley-Fortified-Shiraz.png?v=1760664101
monolith-vintners-old-vine-barossa-valley-grenache-2012
Monolith Vintners Old Vine Barossa Valley Grenache 2012

VINTAGE:

2012

SOURCE/REGION:

BAROSSA VALLEY, SOUTH AUSTRALIA

GRAPE VARIETY:

GRENACHE & BLENDS

CELLARING:

DRINK NOW AND CAN CELLAR FOR THE NEXT 10+ YEARS

BOTTLE TOP:

STELVIN

ALCOHOL CONTENT:

15.00 %

STANDARD DRINKS:

8.90

Tasting Notes

Vivid red with purple highlights at the core. The aroma combines musk and cherry flavours with spice. Underlying licorice, smok ed meat and earth are also evident. The palate appears to have great sweetness and richness of fruit flavour almost to the point of being syrup-like in its concentration. The powerful fruit and alcohol flavours, however, come with a great savouriness, spice and soft yet abundant tannin. High sub-soil moisture levels combined with a long mild summer allowed the Grenache to ripen evenly. The resultant wine is one of balance, clarity and is exceptionally varietal. We hand picked the fruit from a small 150-year-old vineyard from the cooler Eden Valley region of the Barossa, these are considered Ancestor Vines. The fruit was transported to the winery where it was gently de-stemmed into concrete open top fermenters. It was then carefully nurtured for 7 days on skins with pump overs occurring twice daily, varying in duration and intensity. When primary fermentation was almost complete, the wine was drained from the skins and the must is gently basket pressed for 8 hours. The wine remains in a stainless steel tank until primary fermentation is completed. It is then run directly into new American and French barriques where it spent the next 32 months. There are hints of the future here with lemon rind, jasmine and lime cordial characters, which indicate this wine, will be a marvel in years to come. The extra dimension comes in the form of zingy citrus although understated is present the minerally character from the nose presents like wash river stones whilst green apples give a further enhancement and shows great true varietal character. Our style of Riesling is quite tight due to the old vine source and we feel the wine will have longevity like our reds so if drinking now allow it to breathe a little prior to consuming to give the flavours a chance to announce themselves.

Technical

Sourced from a single Eden Valley Vineyard with old weather beaten vines, which embody the history of the region. The vintage indicated early the supreme quality that would be produced by the dry grown, old vines that yielded the fruit we isolated for this special trail blend which was only the second in our history. Good winter rains were key as was the spring rains followed by a cooler than average summer which made for the near perfect conditions to create icon Barossa Shiraz. We hand-picked the fruit and it was transported to the winery where it was gently de-stemmed into concrete open top fermenters. It was then carefully nurtured for 7 days on skins with pump overs occurring twice daily, varying in duration and intensity. When primary fermentation was almost complete, the wine was drained from the skins and the must is gently basket pressed for 8 hours. The wine was transferred into new oak to complete primary fermentation is completed and left in the same new French and American barrels where it spent the next 36 months with submerged bung with only one topping and sulphur addition. The wine was then blended, and the barrels were bottled without the use of filtration or fining. A wonderful example of big and bold Barossa Shiraz which will stand the test of time, ensure it is allowed to breathe for at least 2 hours prior to consuming.

Awards

96 Point Rated - Wine Showcase Magazine 2021
"A luxurious wine with toasty, fruity aromas. Black berry and dark cherry are the dominant character whilst varietal character of cassis is also very evident. The French oak influence is still evident despite its age and highlights the quality of the new large format oak used. Concentrated, tremendous texture and depth are hallmarks of this wine. The great richness which comes from black fruits flavours is immense, brooding and dense.
